The Challenge Behind AMSilk’s Growth
AMSilk, founded in 2008 near Munich, is the world’s first industrial supplier of bio-fabricated silk materials. As demand grew for its next-generation biomaterials, the company faced increasing complexity in data management, compliance, and cross-team collaboration. Paper notebooks and Excel files were no longer sufficient.
AMSilk’s transformation from a research-driven biotech into one of Europe’s most advanced producers of silk-based biomaterials is more than a growth story. Backed by €52 million in new strategic funding and expanding production capacity with partners like Evonik, AMSilk is now scaling operations that once lived purely in the R&D domain.

Michael Hösl leads process development at AMSilk, specializing in scaling up biotech and enzyme-driven production systems. His background spans molecular biotechnology, industrial bioprocessing, and leadership of cross-functional technical teams. At AMSilk, Michael is responsible for translating lab-scale protocols into robust production workflows, ensuring compliance, and integrating informatics and process control systems into growth phases. Before AMSilk, he held roles in enzyme innovation and process development in the biotech sector.
Jakob J. Boysen - Platform Lead , Scifeon
Jakob Boysen serves as Platform Lead at Scifeon, where he drives the technical development and strategic direction of the the digital lab platform. Scifeon – Unified ELN & LIMS Platform. He has experience leading laboratory digitization projects and structuring data workflows, with a strong focus on aligning software architecture to the operational needs of scientific teams. Jakob works closely with clients to ensure the platform is flexible, scalable, and adapted to real lab environments.
